The Pampanga River (formerly known as the Rio Grande de la Pampanga - Great River of Pampanga ) is the second longest river on the island of Luzon and the third longest in the Philippines after the Cagayan . It is located in the Central Luzon region and flows through the provinces of Pampanga , Nueva Ecija , Bulacan , Tarlac and Quezon .

The source rivers of the Pampanga arise in the mountains of the Caraballo Mountains and the Sierra Madre . Before the river flows into Manila Bay south of Macabebe , it meanders over a length of 260 km south through Luzon and is fed by numerous tributaries. The largest of these are, besides the Peñaranda, the Coronel-Santor River and the Rio Chico. On the upper reaches of the Pampanga in the province of Nueva Ecija is the Pantabangan Dam, which was built in 1974 and dams the river in the Pantabangan Reservoir . In addition to generating energy, the dam also serves to irrigate the surrounding agricultural areas and regulate the water masses in the river after heavy rainfall. Today the dam and the resulting lake is also a popular destination for tourists.

The tributaries of the Pampanga, the Maasim, San Miguel, Garlang, Bulu and Penaranda, form the 320 km² Candaba river marshes . They are an important wintering area for migratory birds and a breeding area for native water birds . On the upper reaches of its tributary Angat is one of the most important areas for drinking water production for the metropolitan area of Metro Manila , in the Angat Watershed Forest Reserve .

The lower reaches of the Pampanga in particular are characterized by regular flooding.

Since countless residents and also industrial companies along the Pampanga dispose of normal household waste in the river in addition to untreated sewage due to a lack of alternative disposal options, the river is heavily polluted. Local politicians are therefore calling for this problem to be countered by creating proper landfills and increasing controls on illegal waste disposal in the river.
