The Pantabangan Reservoir is a large dam on the Pampanga River in the Philippines . The dam is one with 104 meters high and 1,615 meters long, the largest in the country.

dam

The dam is located in the Caraballo Mountains on the island of Luzon , in the area of the municipality of Pantabangan in the province of Nueva Ecija . It is used to irrigate 1064 km² of land, to protect against floods and to generate electricity . The reservoir holds a maximum of 2,996 million cubic meters of water and covers an area of 69.62 square kilometers.

The dam was built in a narrow canyon below the confluence of the two rivers Carranglan and Pantabangan. It consists of a mixture of earth and stone rubble. The planning and construction began in 1971 and the construction work lasted until May 1977. The crest width is 12 meters and the depth of the dam at its base is approx. 535 meters. The construction is considered earthquake-proof: it already withstood an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale in 1990. The dam has a flood relief with four independent closures to prevent overflow of the dam. The inflow is controlled by the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) and thus determines the water level of the lake. The irrigation system, which is fed by the reservoir, supplies the farms in districts I and II in the province of Nueva Ecija.

Hydroelectric power plant

The Pantabangan Dam

The Masiway hydropower plant was built from 1977 to 1981 and is located approx. 7 km below the dam. It generates around 100  megawatts of electricity. It is designed as a continuous load power plant and has two Francis turbines , manufactured by Voestalpine , each with a nominal output of 50 megawatts. The power plant is connected to the dam by two pipelines. They measure six meters in diameter and are laid above ground. The hydropower plant is owned by the Philippine National Power Corporation.
