Panda (also PXNDX ) is a Mexican punk rock and alternative rock band from Monterrey , Mexico . It is one of the most recognized and popular bands in both Central and South America.

Band history

The group was formed in 1996 from four friends who said they did not know how to use their free time sensibly. At the beginning of their "career" they played their songs, which they had not yet produced, in garages and the like.

After a few unsuccessful cover versions of famous Latin American songs, the four took part in the so-called "Origen" event in Centrito Valle, a local singing competition for talented, unknown, young bands, the price of which was a few hours in a professional recording studio to spend. Panda took first place in this competition and from then on began to realize their own musical style in their songs. In addition, they began to appear at other events in the Monterrey area and at that time they released their first demo album entitled "Demo 1997", consisting of 17 specially produced songs. However, the album was only recorded in a demo version and in poor quality and did not go on sale in large numbers.

In their songs, Panda took inspiration from everyday things like friends, memories of their youth, parties and love. That year the four signed their first record deal with the independent Movic Records label, which the band is still promoting today. In the same year, drummer Antonio Castillo decided to leave the band to start studying music. He was replaced by Jorge Vazquez, who is still a member of the band today.

Panda achieved her national breakthrough in 2002 with her second album "La revancha del principe Charro". Their first “real” album, entitled “Arroz con leche” from 2000, on which some songs from the album “Demo 1997” were picked up, remained largely unregarded in their own country, especially in the local media. It was only after their final breakthrough that this album was also successfully marketed. After appearances in its own country and in the United States, Panda managed to attract international attention for the first time. After the album was released, Jorge Garza decided to leave the band for personal reasons. He was replaced by Arturo Arredondo, today's bassist and youngest member of the band.

With their third album "Para ti con desprecio" they made themselves famous all over South and Central America and were nominated for the first time for the category of the best band of the MTV Latin America Awards 2005. “Para ti con desprecio” became their most successful album to date. In their home country alone, they sold 600,000 records and were twice platinum. In the following year they were even able to win three prizes of the above mentioned award, in the categories “Best Rock Band”, “Best Band” and “Best New Act”. The next album, "Amantes suntamentes", was released on October 2, 2006. In it they let emotionally influenced elements flow into their texts.

In October 2007 Panda released a single with the title "Nunca nadie nos podrá parar" (span. "Nothing and nobody will be able to stop us"), which was made available to the fans of the band free of charge. The intention of the song was to thank the numerous fans for the years of support and support. The current album, entitled "Sinfonía soledad", was released on November 30, 2007 and is the band's first live album. It is a recording of the Panda concert at the “Auditorio nacional” in Mexico, where the band performed in October 2006. It includes both a CD and a DVD. Today Panda is one of the most famous bands on the continent and tours all over South, Central and North America. Only in Europe is the band and their style largely unknown.

In early 2009, Panda announced that they were working on a new studio album. This album is called Poetics and will be released on September 22nd, 2009 in Mexico. It contains 20 new songs on 2 CDs, four of which have already been released in advance exclusively on iTunes . The first single "Sólo a terceros" was released in July.

Information about the current members

José Madero already played guitar at the age of 13 and from the age of 15 he belonged to various bands. Among other things, a group that appeared under the name "The Purgatory" (1995). The band specialized in particular on songs that were recorded in English and pursued a sometimes dark and depressive sounding style of music. That group also included Ricardo Treviño, another founding member of Panda.

José Madero studied law at the “Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey”, a private university in Monterrey, until the band Panda finally broke through.

  • Ricardo Treviño (Rix) ( May 17, 1980 in Monterrey , Nuevo León ) is the band's bassist, guitarist and backing vocalist. Like Pepe, he was a founding member of the band. Ricardo comes from a more senior background and enjoyed a good education, so that he decided to start studying architecture before starting his active career at Panda.

In the sixth grade, he and his classmates founded their own band called “Los corajes de la abuela”. Until he switched to Panda in 1997, he was a member of the formation "Súper Azfalto", which Arturo Arredondo also belonged to. Jorge is mostly responsible for the visual representation of songs, videos and albums in the band. For example, he produced the videos for the songs “Ya no jalaba”, “Maracas” and “Cita en el quirófano”.

Arturo is both bassist and guitarist for Panda. He also played in the band "Súper Azfalto" and has only been a member of the band since 2004. Before joining Panda, he worked as a salesman and waiter, among other things.

criticism

In 2005, voices were raised that some of the band's songs were very similar to popular songs by other groups. The background to this was an article published in the Mexican newspaper "R&R", in which it was alleged that songs from the album "Para ti con desprecio" in particular were similar to songs by bands of the same genre. Among other things, "My Chemical Romance" and "Fall Out Boy" were named. However, to date there has been no comment or evidence from either party.

Quotes

Bassist and guitarist Ricardo Treviño on the band's popularity and the criticism at the time: “Hay gente que dice: Amas u odias a Panda. Yo creo que son más los que nos aman que los que nos odian, entonces ¿para qué debatir esas cosas? " . (Spanish. "There are people who say: love or hate panda. However, I think there are more people who love us than those who hate us. So why should one discuss such things?")
