Pandanet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pandanet (originally and sometimes as IGS , short for Internet Go Server ), based in Tokyo , Japan , is an Internet Go - server , the Gospielern allowed to play on the Internet with others Go and watch in games. It was founded in 1992 by Tim Casey, Chris Chisolm and Mark Okada and was the first server of its kind. Pandanet is one of the largest go-servers in the world and, depending on the time of day, hosts an average of over 3000 players simultaneously.

history

IGS was first opened to the public in February 1992. The first server was at the University of New Mexico . Two more servers were opened in the first year, one at the University of California, Berkeley and one at the Pasteur Institute in Paris .

software

IGS offers its own clients for various platforms , but it is also possible to log in and play with other programs. Pandanet's current client is GoPanda, which is a further development of gGo. Both were written in Java and can therefore be used on almost all operating systems. Both programs can also be connected to a GNU Go installed on the same computer in order to play against the program. There is now an installable version of GoPanda2 that is available for Windows, Macintosh and Linux and is no longer written in Java.
The clients glGo for Windows, Macintosh and Linux and Pandaegg for Windows are also available for download. The Tetsuki client is available for iOS and Android devices.
Other clients that can be used with Pandanet are, for example, qGo or ViZiGo.
It is also possible to log in and play on the server via Telnet with the address igs.joyjoy.net on ports 6969 and 7777 without a client .

Miscellaneous

IGS Pandanet broadcasts live championship games and professional title games for titles such as the Meijin , Honinbo and Judan .
IGS Pandanet also hosts various picture galleries. The main gallery shows Japanese and Chinese art related to Go. Other galleries hold original prints of geophotographs and photographs from the 19th and early 20th centuries from San Francisco and Chinatown .
