Pandinus is a genus of scorpions in the family of Scorpionidae . The species of this genus are distributed from Senegal over the west coast of Africa to East Africa, two species also occur in Yemen . Most of the animals live in tropical regions, some are also semi-social , i.e. H. they live in groups (mostly siblings) and hunt together.

The largest species of this genus is the emperor scorpion ( Pandinus imperator ). Three species ( Pandinus dictator , Pandinus gambiensis and Pandinus imperator ) are protected under the Washington Convention on Endangered Species, Appendix II, because they were caught a lot to be kept as pets in Europe . The animals tend to be lazy and defend themselves more with their large pedipalps than with the sting. In addition, they have a very weak poison.

The Pandinus species can be identified by their high number of Trichobothria from z. B. differentiate heterometrus species; they have 26 or more on the scissors hand and 22 to 30 on the pedipal pentibia.
