Pandora is a village in Putnam County , Ohio , United States . At the 2000 census, the place had 1,188 inhabitants.

Pandora is located in the fertile plain of the former Great Black Swamp in northwest Ohio, 84.3 miles (135 kilometers) southwest of Lake Erie . Riley Creek flows through the village.

Pandora's neighboring towns are the county capital Ottawa and Gilboa in the north and Columbus Grove and Bluffton in the south. In Bluffton, the town is connected to Interstate 75 , and US Highway 30 runs a few kilometers further south .

history

Putnam County was predominantly populated by Swiss Mennonites from the 1830s . The nucleus of Pandora was a flour mill that John Stout built on the banks of Riley Creek in 1835. The place was first called Columbia, later Pendleton and from 1883 Pandora. In 1959 the village had 717 inhabitants, in 2000 the population had increased to 1,188.

There are currently around 750 Mennonites living in and around Pandora, most of whom belong to the General Conference Mennonite Church . Half of the community members live in the village itself.

Economy and Infrastructure

The primary source of income for Putnam County's residents is agriculture. Meat, grain, tomatoes, potatoes, soybeans and sugar beet are produced. There are also several commercial operations located in Pandora that primarily meet local needs. The Pandora-Gilboa Local School has a high school and four churches on site.

Attractions

The area of ​​the Swiss Settlement of Bluffton-Pandora is located south of the village . The buildings of the first settlers have been partially restored and turned into a museum. Bluffton College has published historical photographs that document the everyday life of farmers in the 19th century.
