history

The "College Township" was a whole township (United States), six miles (9.7 km) in length and width, divided off during the survey of the country . So it covered 36 square miles (about 93 km²) in the northwestern part of Butler County. Today this part is called Oxford Township and is subject to a civil township administration.

As early as May 5, 1792, when the United States Congress authorized the sale of part of the Northwest Territory west of the Great Miami River to John Cleves Symmes , it was decided that a township had to be made available for the establishment of a university and other educational institutions. But this demand was initially lost in subsequent disputes over the land, which was known as the Symmes Purchase . After the establishment of the state of Ohio on April 15, 1803, the establishment of a university was reaffirmed. Finally, on February 17, 1809, a three-person commission was charged with preparing the foundation. This commission selected Township 5 in 1st Range East, later known as Oxford Township.
