Pangaimotu (also: Bagaimotu , Bangaimotu , Panghai-motu , Pangimodu ) is a small island in the Tongatapu archipelago in the north of Tongatapu in the Pacific . Politically, it belongs to the Kingdom of Tonga .

geography

The Motu is located off the north coast of the main island Tongatapu and opposite the suburb of Houmakelikao from Nukuʻalofa . It belongs to the same reef crown as Manima , ʻOneata and Nukunukumotu , which mark the west end of the Piha Passage (Astrolabe Channel). The island has an approximately heart-shaped base. On the southern tip is the Pangaimotu Island Resort . In the west there are the reefs Alert Shoal and Mounu Reef . North of the island is Cresswell Rock and then Makahaʻa joins.

There is an island of the same name in the Vavaʻu archipelago .

climate

The climate is tropical hot, but is tempered by constantly blowing winds. Like the other islands of the Tongatapu group, Pangaimotu is occasionally hit by cyclones .
