history

The Panhandle Alks were founded in June 1981 in the Düsseldorf Ratinger Hof by the former ZK bassist Ralf "Isi" Isbert and George Benten. Their unique "Alkabilly" music is strongly based on the Country and Rockabilly of the 1950s, sometimes with clear Oi! Influences, and is brought closer to the fans of this music with, at the time unique, German-language texts.

They are considered to be the founding fathers of rockabilly from Germany, which until then after the great revival of the 1970s was played by mostly British bands such as Matchbox , Rock Island Line or Crazy Cavan .

The band made its first public appearance under the name "Tex and the Panhandle Alks" at the graduation ceremony of the 1981 graduate class of the Lessing-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf . For their next appearances (including in the legendary “Dallas Inn” in Düsseldorf's old town ) they took the name “Rebel Riders”. After a few gigs in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area, they changed their name one last time to “Panhandle Alks”.

Members

Some members of the band were also active in other bands before or after their time with the Alks: Thorsten Kaeppler with "Colly and the Steamrollers", Chuck Shoker and Michael Schott with the Lennerockers and, as mentioned above, Isi with ZK .
