action

Harry Baldwin, his wife Ann, and children Rick and Karen go on a fishing trip. You just left Los Angeles when the city was hit by a nuclear missile. The third world war has begun. The family wants to return immediately to take the grandparents with them, but in view of the panic and chaos in the city, they decide to drive to their destination and see how things develop there. On the trip they stock up on supplies. But because Harry doesn't have enough cash with him, he wants to pay the rest by check. The shopkeeper Johnson doesn't accept checks, so they forcibly take the rest of his belongings away from him.

The Baldwins meet the three young crooks Carl, Mickey and Andy. But they can leave the three behind. The rest of the journey is horrific, but they reach their destination. The family is encamped in a cave waiting to be relocated from there. Your neighbors are shopkeepers Johnson and his wife, of all people. After a short time, the three criminals reappear and shoot the Johnsons. Another farmer couple is also shot by the three. The gang now uses their house as a shelter, but also as a prison for Marilyn, the teenage daughter of the killed farmer couple. When Mother Baldwin goes to the river with Karen to do laundry, an item of laundry drifts down the river unnoticed. The two criminals Mickey and Andy, who spot the item of laundry, track down Karen and attack her in order to assault her. However, Mother Ann manages to drive them off with a rifle and just save Karen from being raped. Harry and Rick track down the two marauders in the farmhouse and kill them. They find Marilyn and take her in. Carl is now alone and tries to get Marilyn back. While she is out with Rick to get wood, Marilyn is ambushed by Carl and threatened with a gun. Rick and Marilyn are able to fend off Carl's attack, but Rick is seriously injured in the leg while Carl is shot by Marilyn.

With the help of Marilyn, Rick is taken to Doctor Strong. Strong can only provide first aid, Rick must have an operation in an Army hospital or he will die from the injury. But the nearest hospital is more than 100 miles away. The Baldwins drive in the direction of the hospital, accompanied by Marilyn. On the way, they are suddenly stopped by several armed men. From a machine gun salvo, Harry realizes that they are soldiers, because only the military are allowed automatic weapons in the USA. After a brief meeting, the Baldwins are waved through with Marilyn so that they can reach the hospital.
