William Austin (film editor)

William Nelson Austin (born January 28, 1903 in Nanaimo , British Columbia , Canada , † December 28, 1993 in Los Angeles ) was an American film editor .

Life

William Austin worked as an editor for small production companies in Hollywood from 1928. His editing work includes more than 150 films, most of which are small B-films of various genres. In two of these films, Special Inspector and Convicted from 1938, Rita Hayworth played the leading female role - a year before her breakthrough as an actress. In 1944 Austin was responsible for the editing of the Sherlock Holmes film The Spider's Nest with Basil Rathbone as Holmes at Universal Studios . Austin worked again afterwards for insignificant studios, but in 1953 he received an Oscar nomination in the category Best Editing for Sturmgeschwader Komet .

From 1953 he was also used in US television, including ten episodes of the television show by the comedian duo Abbott and Costello . In 1978 he worked one last time as the editor of a movie. He died in Los Angeles in 1993 at the age of 90 .
