Panopeus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Panopeus ( Greek  Πανοπεύς ; also Φανοτεύς Phanoteus ) is a son of Phocos and Asteria or Asterodia in Greek mythology and eponym of the city of the same name in Phocis , near the border with Boiotia .

Panopeus, the greatest of Aigisthus' friends in arms , is the twin brother of Krisos and already quarreled with him in the womb.

Panopeus, who was a great hunter and, after Ovid, had also taken part in the Calydonian boar hunt , went with Amphitryon in his war against King Pterelaos and the Taphier . He previously swore an oath not to steal any of the spoils of war, but broke this oath and was punished by the gods: His son Epeius became a completely non-warlike person, who nevertheless achieved some skill in fistfighting and the arts - he built it Trojan horse .

Theseus fell in love with his daughter Aigle and broke the oath of loyalty given by the hero Ariadne for her.

The grave inscription of Agathias on Panopeus lets him die of a scorpion sting and brings him close to Orion and his fate.
