A red Panton Chair - first introduced in 1967

The Panton Chair is a cantilever chair or chair designed by the Danish designer and architect Verner Panton , which is still in production today and is considered a classic of Pop Art and furniture design .

history

Verner Panton developed back-legged chairs during his studies. In 1955, an S-shaped chair was created from continuously shaped plywood with a curved contour. But Panton's goal was to make a chair out of plastic , as he was enthusiastic about the properties and possibilities of this material. At the end of the 1950s he succeeded in developing the first model of the Panton Chair made of polystyrene , which, however, was not yet stable enough to sit on. Despite a public exhibition at Eriksholm near Helsingör , no suitable manufacturer could be found for series production. Panton therefore worked with wood again.

In 1963 there was a cooperation with the Swiss company Vitra . Panton moved with his family to Basel, together a Panton Chair was developed for series production , which was presented to the public for the first time in August 1967.

The first pre-series made of lacquered fiberglass-reinforced polyester from 1967 was far too expensive to produce and was replaced in 1968 with a version made of rigid polyurethane foam when series production began . In 1970 , the manufacturer Vitra changed the material again in order to further reduce the work involved in post-processing ; However, the inadequate resistance of the dyed-through Luran S used to dynamic loads led to breaks in the chair over time and, as a result, to the discontinuation of production in 1979.

Due to the sustained demand, the Horn company resumed production of the model made of rigid polyurethane foam for WK Wohnen in 1983 . From 1990 Vitra took over the production again and developed alternative materials and production methods in close cooperation with Panton. In 1999 a second, significantly cheaper variant of the Panton Chair made of polypropylene came onto the market.

In the USA, the Herman Miller company has been producing the Panton Chair in collaboration with Vitra right from the start.
