Panzer Corps is a turn-based strategy game series by the publisher Slitherine Ltd. It takes place in a (partly fictional) world war scenario. The successor Panzer Corps 2 appeared in March 2020 .

Panzer Corps

Panzer Corps was released in 2011 after two years of development. The game structure is very similar to the turn-based game Panzer General from 1994. Currently, Panzer Corps is sold on the Internet, either as a direct download or, if you wish, a box version with a printed manual can be ordered at a small extra charge.

Gameplay

The playing card is represented with a hexagonal grid on which the different types of troops can be moved. In a single turn, the player can move any of his troops within the scope of their abilities or perform special actions (such as reloading, increasing troops, transport). Then the opponent moves his troops before the player can make his next turn.

There is a campaign mode in which individual battles must be won at a time, i.e. H. an entire map must always be conquered under certain conditions. You can take the side of the Axis powers and continue the conquest of the Allied territories in an alternative reality. If you end the individual battles below a certain minimum number of moves, this has a positive effect on the further course of the campaign for the player. There are four different campaigns to choose from.

In the scenario mode, individual battles are fought without much context. About two dozen scenarios are possible to choose from.

There are various basic types of troops (infantry, artillery, tanks, reconnaissance tanks, anti-aircraft, anti-tank, fighters, tactical bombers, strategic bombers, various ship classes), each of which is divided into several specific units. For example, there are grenadiers , pioneers , bridge pioneers , mountain fighters , paratroopers and cavalry in the game under the infantry category of the Wehrmacht . Each of these units has different strengths and weaknesses (for example, an anti-tank gun is good against tanks, but has a low degree of effectiveness against infantry; tanks are strong in open terrain, but are conditionally weak in cities or forests).

In-game currency is prestige, which is used to acquire new troops or to renew existing ones. The player gains prestige, among other things, by successfully occupying enemy cities. The terrain and the weather have an influence on the movement of troops and the outcome of the battle. Individual types of troops can randomly be awarded with good combat results, it is also possible to get a special elite troop by completing a scenario well.

In addition to the single player mode, there is also a multiplayer function.

By gaining prestige points, which are used to buy units consisting of soldiers and vehicles, the player is suggested that the destruction of enemy units and one's own attack in the military sense is the desired option. The human resource is immediately available as an unlimited factor and vehicles are shown as an immediately available resource in terms of the amount of prestige points. The aspect of logistics in the military sense is neglected, as is the medical services and command troops, in order to maintain proximity to tactical games. The aspects of production in an interplay between the human resource as a worker or soldier, their training via barracks and military training area, and the production resources of energy, steel and rubber for production or consumables and ammunition do not appear in the strategy game as a planning element. The formation of a flying formation takes just as long as that of an infantry. Time only plays a role with regard to the limited number of laps. B. must be decided between tactical refueling / ammunition and rapid advance.

Additions and extensions

As early as November 2011, Slitherine began publishing additional Grand Campaign scenarios, which were available for download from the Internet and are intended to give the game additional depth. So are z. As in the Grand Campaign '40 no less than 14 new scenarios from the German western campaign of 1940 is available, which is dealt with in the base game in just two scenarios. A total of ten different Grand Campaign expansions were published by the beginning of 2013 , which deal with various campaigns on the European Eastern and Western Front between 1939 and 1945 and are now all available together as a "Mega Pack". As in the base game, the player can take his core units with him from one campaign to the next, let them gain experience and equip them with new types of weapons.

In contrast to the fictional campaign of the base game, in which successful players can conquer the USA, the total of 10 Grand Campaigns are based on the actual course of the Second World War.

In August 2012 the independently playable expansion Panzer Corps: Afrikakorps was released , which contains 24 historical and fictional scenarios from the North African and Near Eastern theater of war. In mid-2013, the expansion Panzer Corps: Allied Corps was released, which now enables the player to take on the role of a British or American military leader for an entire campaign, which was previously only possible in individual scenarios. In October 2015. Panzer Corps: Operation Sea Lion released that can play in 30 scenarios the fictional German invasion of England in 1941st Players can play this campaign as part of the Grand Campaign or as a standalone campaign.

On February 18, 2016, "Soviet Corps" was released, another independently playable expansion in which you take command of the Soviet troops. We are currently working on further extensions in the style of the Grand Campaign . Panzer Corps: US Corps is currently in beta and the release is planned for the end of May in three parts (US Corps '42, US Corps '43 and US Corps '44 -'45).

Modifications

As early as August 2011, the game's fan base began to design and distribute its own modifications or specially created scenarios. In August 2011, for example, the modification "Afrika Korps" (Africa campaign from 1940) was the first non-commercial expansion of the game, which attracted a lot of attention with its specially designed units and landscapes. Such modifications in the style of a total conversion appeared again and again in the following years. In 2012, further total conversion mods were published under the name “ Winterkrieg ” (Soviet – Finnish War from 1939) and “Eastern Front” (German – Soviet War from 1941).

In 2013, "Pacific Corps" (Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 and Pacific War from 1941) appeared, one of the most elaborate modifications of its kind to the game. In addition to these expansions through scenarios, smaller mods appear in forums and on fansites at regular intervals. These modifications often contain new units (unit mods), newly designed units ( sprites ) or changed options in the game (mutator mods). All these privately created modifications of the fan base can be found on various fan sites and forums and can be downloaded there free of charge.

Modifications are widespread in the fan base as a supplement to the official supplementary sets (DLC) from the game manufacturer Slitherine. The developer studio LordZGames and Slitherine are very open to these modifications and refer to the commitment of the fan base in their own forum. The developers themselves are partly involved in the modifications and in 2015 the card designer Nikivdd published a modification that revives SSI's original Panzer General campaign in Panzer Corps, including the original audio briefings.

Panzer Corps 2

On March 8, 2017, the continuation of the Panzer Corps 2 series by Slitherine Ltd. announced. The game is originally scheduled to appear in 2018, but it wasn't launched until March 2020. The development takes place through Flashback Games in the Unreal Engine 4.
