Paola De Micheli (born September 1, 1973 in Piacenza ) is an Italian manager and politician , member of the Partito Democratico (PD) and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in the government of Giuseppe Conte since September 5, 2019 . She is the first woman to hold this office.

Life

De Micheli graduated from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan with a degree in Political Science and worked as a manager in the food industry.

She entered politics in the late 1990s , during the reign of the center-left alliance L'Ulivo , and was a councilor in Pontenure from 1999 to 2004 . In 2007 she became a member of the Partito Democratico and from 2007-2010 was councilor for human, economic and financial resources in her native Piacenza.

Early political career

In the parliamentary elections in 2008 De Micheli was elected to the Chamber of Deputies and supported Pier Luigi Bersani in the party executive elections in 2009, who appointed her as national responsible for small and medium-sized enterprises .

After being re-elected MP in the 2013 parliamentary elections, De Micheli was State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy and Finance in the Renzi and Gentiloni Cabinets from 2014-2017 . In September 2017, De Micheli resigned from the Ministry of Finance to replace Vasco Errani in his role as commissioner for the reconstruction of the areas devastated by earthquakes in 2016 and 2017.

She was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the third time in the 2018 parliamentary elections. She supported Nicola Zingaretti in the 2019 party executive elections . As soon as he was elected party secretary, De Michelis was nominated as deputy party leader of the Partito Democratico.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

On September 5, 2019, De Micheli was appointed Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in the government of Giuseppe Conte , who leads a coalition between the Democratic Party and Movimento 5 Stelle .
