Paolo Olmi (born May 23, 1954 in Terni ) is an Italian conductor .

Olmi had piano lessons since childhood and studied conducting in Rome with Franco Ferrara and Massimo Pradella . He worked as a conductor from 1979 and began his career as an opera conductor at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna in 1986. After a successful production of Moses in Egypt at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, Wolfgang Sawallisch invited him to perform the opera at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He made his debut at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin in 1992 and returned there for performances of La fanciulla del West , Aida , La forza del destino and Il trovatore . After the successful debut with Gioachino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Hamburg State Opera , he directed a production of La forza del destino there in the 1998/1999 season .

Together with the director Pier Luigi Pizzi , Olmi received the French music critic award for a production by Wilhelm Tell at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. In Italy he had success with Rossini's Le siège de Corinthe at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and a performance of his Stabat mater with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Chorus in the Verona Arena. As an opera conductor he continued to perform at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden ( Moses in Egypt ), the Opéra de Lyon ( Le nozze di Figaro ), the Strasbourg Opera ( Tosca , Don Carlos , Ernani ), the Royal Copenhagen Opera ( Madama Butterfly ), at the Chicago Lyric Opera ( Madama Butterfly , 1996) and at the Teatro Colón ( Manon Lescaut ). In 2000 he directed a performance of Aida at the new Shanghai Opera House. From 2006 to 2011 he was musical director of the Opéra National de Nancy et de Lorraine.

Olmi is also successful as a concert conductor. He has worked with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra , the Orchester National de France , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London and produced a complete recording of the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy symphonies for Italian television with the RAI orchestra . He performed with the orchestra of the Royal Opera House in Spain in 1996, in Athens in 1997 and on a concert tour of Germany and Italy in 2000.
