The place Papenrode is located in a wavy, tree-poor area that is mainly used for agriculture. To the east is the small settlement "Auf der Bünne". There are numerous wind turbines around the place . history

Papenrode was first mentioned in 1150 as Papenrothe : the St. Ludgeri Monastery in Helmstedt owned land there. It is believed that the place name refers to it; in addition, Papenrode is one of the -rode places. In 1475 the town of Königsdorf (mentioned in 1249 as Cuningesdorp ), only 700 meters to the north-west, fell desolate .

Papenrode used to be a parish pastor to Bahrdorf, today the evangelical population belongs to the St. Maria St. Cyriakus community based in Groß Twülpstedt.

The Täger mill was built around 1650, the wings of which were dismantled in 1920. It is a station on the Lower Saxony Mühlenstrasse . The mill technology is still available today. A new school had to be built twice because the number of students had become too large, the last time in 1864 in the center of the village. The building of the previous school is on the monument square. Today there is no longer a school in Papenrode.

In 1885 the population was 301 (in 45 residential buildings), in 1947 the number of refugees reached 501.
