Poplar pond is the name for a pond in the Maurer forest .

location

The poplar pond is located a little south of the imaginary extension of Anton-Krieger-Gasse in the Maurer Forest, right next to the promenade there. There are three public playgrounds in the immediate vicinity. The way to the Pappelteich starts from Anton-Krieger-Gasse at the open-air planetarium Sterngarten .

history

The poplar pond, including the plants that gave it its name, around 1930. At that time, it was still without an artificial border made of concrete and stone.

The poplar pond was already marked on maps in 1872. Around 1940 it was expanded as a bathing facility for the residents of the nearby (never completely expanded) air intelligence barracks in Mauer . The concrete and brick bank reinforcements date from this time. Its name is derived from the poplars that grow next to the pond. Most of these poplars had to be felled in 2004 due to old age. In 2010 new poplars were planted to give the pond its name.

use

The poplar pond is a rectangular walled and concreted basin approx. 30 meters long and approx. 15 meters wide. It is a stagnant body of water without being fed from the groundwater or from a tributary. Its only natural water supply is rainwater. Originally it was fed by a small spring, which was however set in concrete. This interrupted the inflow. The poplar pond is an important habitat for plants and animals. The candelabrum grows on its bottom , and water lilies bloom on the surface . The pond and its surroundings live brown frogs , toads , salamanders , yellow-bellied toads , mountain and newts , grass snakes , fish and ducks .

Apart from its importance as a habitat for flora and fauna , it is a popular resting place for hikers and the local population due to its idyllic appearance and precisely because of the animals that can be observed.

Danger

Due to climate change , there have been more and more drier and hotter summers in recent years. In recent years this has led to ever lower water levels and in 2018 even to the poplar pond almost drying out. The municipal department 45 (Vienna Waters) took structural measures to improve the water supply to the poplar pond. The measures led to a significantly higher water level in 2019.
