history

Foundation, expansion through branches

The company was founded in 1902 by Gottlob Schneider as a paper and felt wholesaler under the name G. Schneider & Sons in Ettlingen. The first branch was founded in 1919. In 1928 paper and felt wholesalers were separated. In 1937 the company traded as G. Schneider & Söhne kG. In 1940 the company was renamed Papierschneider. In 1965 the legal form changed to G. Schneider & Söhne GmbH & Co. KG.

Envelope factory

An envelope factory was founded in Ettlingen as early as 1949 . In 1950/51, the company built its own office and factory buildings and introduced the first range for the paper wholesale trade. The envelope factory was made legally independent as Schneidersöhne Kuvert GmbH & Co. KG as a subsidiary in 1991. After Schneidersöhne was taken over by the Stora Enso wholesale subsidiary Papyrus (see below), the company was renamed Papyrus Kuvert GmbH & Co. KG. In 2013, the envelope division was sold to the envelope manufacturer Mayer-Kuvert-Network, based in Heilbronn.

Growth through takeovers in Germany

In 1984 Schneider initially took over the Stöckicht & Fricke paper wholesaler in Hanover and took a stake in the Vetter forwarding company in Ettlingen, before taking over the Obst & Co paper wholesaler in Berlin the following year. From 1986 the company traded as Schneidersöhne Papier. In 1987 the two paper wholesalers Bauer & Co., based in Nuremberg, and Carl Lange Successor, based in Bremen, were taken over. The takeover of the paper wholesaler Benoit GmbH in Saarbrücken followed in 1995. The takeover of the paper wholesaler Kienzerle + Haustein in Ulm took place in 2000.

After a stake in Römerturm Feinstpapier GmbH & Co. KG in Frechen (2003), Classen-Papier GmbH, based in Essen, was taken over in 2004, a previously important competitor.

Internationalization in Europe

In 1989 the paper agency Schneidersöhne International and with Schneider Papier Benelux in Holland and the participation in the paper wholesaler Tschoner in Innsbruck and Vienna were founded the first international branches. Tschoner was later renamed IT-Papier GmbH (1994). This was followed by the founding of Schneidersöhne Paper Prague (1992), Schneidersöhne Luxemburg GmbH (1993), Alsace Papier SA (1994) and Eurotrade GmbH as an international trading house (1994). In 1997 Schneidersöhne Papier Baltija UAB in Kaunas / Lithuania and Schneider Papír Hungary KFT in Budapest were founded. Alsace Papier SA now renamed Schneider Papier France SARL In Temse , Belgium , the company founded Schneider Papier Benelux BVBA (2000) and Schneider Papier Italia GmbH (2001) in Verona .

Antitrust proceedings in 1993 and 2004

In February 1993, the state cartel authority of North Rhine-Westphalia imposed legally binding fines on the company and other major companies in the industry for coordinating sales prices in the warehouse business.

In 2004 the Federal Cartel Office again imposed fines on the company and other major companies in the industry for illegal price fixing.

Development since 2005

In 2005, the Schneider family, who were previously active as shareholders, sold the company. Schneidersöhne itself was taken over by the Gothenburg wholesale subsidiary Papyrus AB of the Finnish-Swedish forest and paper group Stora Enso (takeover in stages by July 31, 2007). At that time, the company was one of the leading European paper wholesalers, had 15 warehouse locations in Germany, its own subsidiaries in Western Europe (Belgium, France, Holland, Luxembourg, Italy and Switzerland) and Eastern Europe (Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary and the Czech Republic) and achieved with 2,100 employees a turnover of 1.1 billion euros (2004). Schneider sons and Papyrus were the second largest paper wholesaler in Europe with a combined sales volume of around 1.8 million tons.

In March 2008, the parent company Papyrus AB was taken over by the Swedish financial investor Altor Equity Partners . Schneidersöhne welcomed the decoupling from the paper manufacturer in order to be able to appear more neutral again towards customers.

In 2010, as part of the realignment of the Papyrus Group, Schneidersöhne Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG was renamed Papyrus Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG. In 2017, the holding company Papyrus AB was renamed OptiGroup to enable the company to transform into an attractive multi-product sales and service solution provider. In 2019 Papyrus Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG was taken over by Papier Union GmbH.

Acquisition in 2019

On August 1, 2019, the Cartel Office gave clearance for the takeover by Inapa. Papyrus Deutschland has officially been a member of Inapa since August 1, 2019.

Award

In 2004 Papyrus Germany was awarded the German Prize for Business Communication for its social commitment .
