The Parada do Orgulho LGBT (German: "Parade des LGBT pride") is now the world's largest gay pride parade . It has been held annually since 1997 on the first Sunday after Pentecost in São Paulo , Brazil .

Events

The parade takes place on the Sunday after Corpus Christi on Avenida Paulista in the São Paulo financial district. It has been the largest of its kind in the world since 2002. All around the parade, which appears on the front pages of the major daily newspapers and is mentioned in television coverage throughout the country, various events take place during “Pride Month” in June for the benefit of all citizens different partners highlight issues that are important for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals. Activities cover the areas of visibility, entertainment, discussions, culture, health and sports. There will also be a series of workshops and discussions in remote working-class districts of São Paulo that will bring knowledge of human rights for LGBTs and STD / AIDS prevention to people who previously did not have access to such information.

history

The first parade on June 28, 1997 only drew 2,000 people. Music played a single minibus, a favor from the São Paulo Seamstresses Union . 7,000 people came to the second parade and the association APOGLBT (Associação da Parada do Orgulho GLBT de São Paulo - São Paulo LGBT Pride Parade Association) was founded. In 1999 the acronym GLBT was first used to promote the social and political visibility of bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals. From 2008 the organizing committee decided to give lesbian women more visibility and changed the name to Parada do Orgulho LGBT de São Paulo . In 2000, the parade received state support from the Ministry of Health and assistance from the city administration for the first time. The attendance jumped to 120,000 and it received national attention.

After previously a Sunday around June 27th (→ Stonewall ) had been chosen and it happened to be the Sunday after Corpus Christi in 2000, the date of the event was moved to that Sunday from 2001 to promote tourism. This year the tradition of gay days in the amusement parks and the annual “Cultural Fair” with exhibitions as well as drag and cross-dressing shows began. In 2002, 25 music cars drove on Avenida Paulista in the financial district of São Paulo and half a million people came. This made the parade the largest of its kind in the world. The visibility of lesbians was also increased, with lesbian motorcyclists leading the procession and percussionists , singers and women's bands entertaining the crowd. In the eighth parade in 2004, the focus was on the family and the parade took place despite major financial problems. Since 2004 it has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest gay pride parade in the world . Civil marriage was made an issue in 2005 after legislators had been inactive for 10 years after the initial initiative.

During the tenth parade in 2006, 200 community agents distributed condoms. This year, the organizers were also attacked for the first time in a legal battle. In 2007 the APOGLBT had to spend time and resources to regain the right to use Avenida Paulista for the parade, which the government supported. The organizers also commissioned the event agency Funprime to expand and professionalize the fundraising and support efforts . Among the 3 million people there were also 300,000 tourists from all over the world. The event agency also made some changes in 2008 and adequate logistics should ensure that the multi-million dollar event remains safe. For the first time, the organizational structure was also divided into eleven independent areas, each with a responsible manager.

From the tourist office of the city is estimated that in 2008 because of the events around 330,000 tourists come to the city, including at least 5% from abroad. They are expected to spend around € 73 million and directly or indirectly secure around 13,500 jobs. The major event sponsor was the Petrobras oil company with around 300,000 euros.

In 2009, on the night after the parade, a self-made bomb was thrown from a window into the crowd on a street with several nightclubs frequented by gays and lesbians. There were 21 injured, five of whom were taken to hospital.

Growing criticism from evangelicals

Since 2002 homosexuals in Brazil have been exposed to increased pressure from fundamentalist Christians (so-called evangelicals ). These Christian groups expressed their rejection of the homosexual way of life in 2007 with a “Jesus March” in the run-up to the Parada do orgulho LGBT , in which around 1 million people took part. The motto was: "Vade retro [back down], Satanism, vade retro, homosexuality!" The background is the social debate about the introduction of same-sex marriage in Brazil.
