Park Min-gyu (* 1968 in Ulsan , Gyeongsangnam-do ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Park Min-gyu studied creative writing with a major in poetry at Chung-Ang University in Seoul . After completing his studies, he worked in various companies and as editor-in-chief of a local magazine. However, he wanted to become a writer and spent his time at home writing stories.

In 2003 he published his first two novels, both of which were very successful. He received the Munhakdongne Writer's Prize for legends about earthly heroes and the Hankyoreh Literature Prize for The Last Fan Club of the Sammi Superstars . His writing style was something new in the Korean literary world. On the website of the Words without Borders project , his style is described as follows: “Unusual metaphors and descriptions, sentences and paragraphs that ignore all the rules of grammar, narrative structures that override the logical law of causation , and characters that look like characters from one Comic behavior. There was nothing in his writing style that could be described as ordinary. ”His debut work Legends About Earthly Heroes is about American comic heroes like Batman , Wonder Woman and Aquaman . The main character, called Bananaman, meets these heroes and forms the Super Squad with them . While Park's work parodies American heroism , it also criticizes hegemonic violence.

In 2005 Park received the Shin Dong yeop Literature Prize for his Castella short story collection . In 2007 he received the Lee Hyo-seok Literature Prize for A Boat on the Yellow River . In 2010 his short story Ein Nickerchen was adapted as a play. The super junior singer Kim Ki-bum also played a role in this.

In 2014 he participated in the short story collection Nunmeon Jadeul-ui Gukka , which deals with the misfortune of Sewol .
