history
The American Tract Society Building was built from 1894 to 1895. It was designed by the architect RH Robertson, who was previously known primarily for his churches and other office buildings. It is one of the first skyscrapers to be built from a steel frame and was the tallest office building in the city when it was completed. The American Tract Society was founded in 1845 and was a publisher that made a name for itself primarily through publications on the American Civil War and religious topics. The American Tract Society Building was at the end of the so-called Newspaper Row (today Park Row), at which several important office buildings for American newspapers and publishers stood, such as the Park Row Building or the Potter Building .
After the American Tract moved out, the New York Sun moved into the building from 1914 to 1919. Today there are condominiums in the building.
