Park Sang-ryung (born August 26, 1940 in Changsu , Chŏllabuk-do , † July 1, 2017 in Canada ) was a South Korean writer .
Life
Park Sang-ryung was born the youngest of nine siblings. One of his trademarks was his profound and skilful use of the dialect of Chlalla province in his works. He studied creative writing at the Sorabol Academy of Arts and Political Science at Kyŏngbuk National University in Taegu . In 1963 he made his debut with the short story Akeldama (아겔 다마), which was awarded in a literary competition. Since 1969 Park lived in Vancouver , Canada , but continued to write and publish his works in Korean.
job
In his works, Park examined the nature of death and spiritual enlightenment. A study on death (죽음 의 한 연구) was one of his flagship works in this regard, in which the author used a large number of clues and symbols to discuss the various approaches to understanding death in Buddhism , Christianity and Taoism and thus its mystery uncover. Park argued à la Nietzsche that the central impulse that underlies all religions is the human need for immortality and that the divine is a man-made construction that merely serves as a bridge for the failure of human intelligence.
The psychoanalytic theories of the collective subconscious and the works of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky also influenced Park. Most of his works unfold in an isolated or fictional landscape and criticize power and modern civilization as such. His work The Path to the Underworld (열명 길), for example, takes the justification ad absurdum that the human struggle for power is actually only a kind of self-preservation and his work Gleissende Sonne (뙤약볕) addresses the issue of alienation from the point of view of one Individual suffering from a "loss of speech".
Park is known for writing long compound sentences that are only broken by commas. These sentences consist of six to ten lines, which is unusual in Korean literature.
