history

A sculpture exhibited in the park created by Arnold Huggler , which was given to Gottlieb Duttweiler on his seventieth birthday.

In 1925, Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler bought a meadow from a farmer, the price was four francs per square meter. Over the years, he and his wife Adele Duttweiler-Bertschi expanded the property by purchasing several parcels with meadows, forests and fields from the Langhalden cooperative. In several steps, a contiguous area of 45,000 m² came together by 1930. In 1933, a modest house with a thatched roof, the so-called “straw house”, was built on the edge of the site. It was initially used as a private residence, later for commercial purposes and finally as a clubhouse . On December 30, 1936, the Ring of Independents was founded in the building.

After the end of the war, the painter Hermann Gattiker was commissioned to transform the property into a park. Shortly after notarising the property as the “Im Grüene Foundation”, the Duttweiler couple donated the park to the Migros Cooperative Association (MGB) at Christmas 1946. From June 1947 the park was initially available to the members of the Migros cooperative, and a little later to the general public. At that time, the gift was valued at 520,000 francs, which today corresponds to around 2.6 million francs as measured by the consumer price index.

The "Im Grüene Foundation" also aimed to set up an institute that would conduct scientific research in the field of cooperatives and the distribution of goods. It should also promote events, courses and meetings. On February 17, 1962, Gottlieb Duttweiler laid the foundation stone for the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute named after him . The first independent think tank in Switzerland started operations on September 1, 1963.

In 1961 the straw house burned down and was then restored by S + M Architects. After Duttweiler's death the following year, the MGB opened a permanent exhibition about his life in the building. From 1972 the straw house was also available for cultural purposes. The park was expanded in 2000 and 2001, with a Migros restaurant and additional visitor parking spaces being created in the entrance area. In 2001 the straw house was declared a monument and the interior was rebuilt.
