biography

Badal began his political career before the sovereignty of India and in 1947 joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a party of the Sikhs in the Punjab. In 1957 he was elected as a candidate for the SAF for the first time to the State Assembly of the State of Punjab and was re-elected as such in 1969 and 1972.

In February 1969, Chief Minister Gurinam Singh appointed him to the Punjab State Government as Development Minister . On March 27, 1970, he was his successor and was the first time Chief Minister (Chief Minister) of the Punjab until June 13, 1971 . After the period of administration by the central government ( President's rule ) ordered by the president , he was Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly from 1972 to July 1975. During the imposition of a state of emergency in Punjab, he was imprisoned from July 9, 1975 to January 19, 1977.

He was elected in March 1977 as a representative of the Faridkot constituency as a member of the Lower House ( Lok Sabha ). On March 26, 1977, Prime Minister Morarji Desai appointed him Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation to the Union government. From this office he resigned on June 17, 1977 and three days later on June 20, 1977 was again chief minister of the Punjab. However, his SAD suffered a defeat in the elections to the State Assembly in February 1980, so that on February 16, 1980 he lost his office as chief minister.

In both 1980 and 1985 he was re-elected as a member of the State Assembly, in which he was again opposition leader.

After his party's election victory in February 1997, he became chief minister for the third time on February 12, 1997, this time forming a coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was in office until February 26, 2002.

In the run-up to the 2007 elections, he again formed an electoral alliance with the BJP, which resulted in an overwhelming election success. On March 2, 2007 he was able to become Chief Minister for the fourth time. With his son-in-law Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, his nephew Manpreet Singh Badal, the brother-in-law of his son Sukhbir Badal (Bikram Singh Majithia) and another close relative Janmeja Singh Sekhon, he appointed four members of his family to the government of the state into his new government. In the 2012 elections, contrary to the mood of change that usually prevails in Punjab, the ruling coalition was re-elected and Parkash Singh Badal was confirmed in office. The 2017 parliamentary election in Punjab was lost for the BJP-SAD coalition. On March 16, 2017, Amarinder Singh (Congress Party) was elected as Chief Minister's successor to Parkash Singh Badal.

His wife died in 2011. In 2015 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan .
