Parley Davis (born March 31, 1766 in Oxford , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † April 14, 1848 in Montpelier , Vermont ) was an American brigadier general .

Davis was one of the first white settlers in Montpelier and came to the region in 1787. In November 1794 he married Rebbecca Peabody of Johnson . The Parley Davis House he built has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1989 . It was in this house that Davis founded the town's first library.

He became a colonel in 1798 and was elected brigadier general of the Vermont Militia in October 1799. Davis resigned from this post in 1806. In 1814 he led the county's troops in the Battle of Plattsburgh .

Politician

Davis was elected constable and tax collector in the first town meeting in 1791 . In 1793 (and then again from 1797 to 1800, 1802, 1807 and 1823) he was a member of the city council. Davis was also a delegate for Montpelier. In 1799 he was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives, as well as in 1802 and 1805. He was also chairman of the Vermont Railroad Association since 1830 , about 18 years before the first railroad construction in Vermont.
