Parodia mueller-melchersii is a species of plant in the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet mueller-melchersii honors the German cactus collector Mr. Müller-Melchers, whosupplied the Kakteen-Haage nurserywith South American cacti.

Parodia mueller-melchersii usually grows individually. The dull green, elongated spherical shoots reach heights of growth of up to 8 centimeters and a diameter of 6 centimeters. The 20 to 24 ribs are arranged in a spiral and not noticeably subdivided into cusps. The areoles on them are white. The one to three (rarely four) straight central spines are protruding or directed downwards. They are light brown or yellowish, have a darker tip and are 1.5 to 2 centimeters long. The twelve to 18 splaying radial spines are yellowish white to white and up to 1 centimeter long.

The light golden yellow to lemon yellow to reddish flowers reach lengths of up to 3 centimeters and diameters of 5 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with white wool and dark bristles. The scars are pale carmine to pink in color. When ripe, the green fruits are elongated like tubes and have lengths of up to 2 centimeters (rarely up to 3 centimeters).

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia mueller-melchersii is common in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay .

The first description as Notocactus mueller-melchersii by Curt Backeberg was published in 1936. Nigel Paul Taylor placed the species in 1987 in the genus Parodia . Another nomenclature synonym is Ritterocactus mueller-melchersii (Frič ex Backeb.) Doweld (1999).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Parodia mueller-melchersii subsp. gutierrezii (WRAbraham) Hofacker
  • Parodia mueller-melchersii subsp. winkleri (Vliet) Hofacker

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
