The Communist Party (Italian: Partito Comunista (Svizzera), French: Parti Communiste (Suisse)) is a political party in Switzerland, which until now has only been active in the Canton of Ticino and Canton of Graubünden .

history

The Communist Party (Switzerland) emerged from the Ticino section of the Swiss Labor Party (PdAS) and took on its current name in 2007. In 2014 the Partito Comunista was excluded from the PdAS. He was accused, among other things, of suspending several long-standing activists, of contributing too little personally and financially to the Swiss party, and of developing unsettled international activities. Shortly afterwards, a new PdAS section, the Partito Operaio e Popolare , was founded in Ticino , which has since politicized in competition with the CP.

The Communist Party is characterized by its regular foreign policy statements, in which it takes positions that are unusual for the (Swiss) left: it radically rejects the EU and instead calls for a deepening of economic relations between Switzerland and the BRICS states. In the Middle East she supports the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad and the Turkish republican left against the separatist Kurdish movement. It maintains official relations with the governing parties of Laos and North Korea .

Since the cantonal elections on April 19, 2015, the CP has been represented on the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino with its secretary Massimiliano Ay . Ay was elected on a joint list of the CP and the Movement for Socialism . The KP has had two representatives on the Grand Council since 2019. For the 2019 National Council election , the CP did not draw up a list of its own, but it does support the Communist Youth candidates on a joint list with the Greens and the Alternative Forum around ex- SP parliamentary group leader Franco Cavalli .
