Francesco "Franco" Cavalli (born July 3, 1942 in Locarno ; resident in Verscio ) is a Swiss oncologist and politician ( SP ).

Life

From 1978 to 2007 Cavalli was chief oncology specialist at the Bellinzona Hospital . Since 1986 he has been honorary professor at the University of Bern ; since 1993 associate professor at the University of Varese . Between 2001 and 2004 he was President of the Swiss Cancer League , until 2017 he was Director of the Oncological Institute of Italian-speaking Switzerland (IOSI) in Bellinzona, and in 2006 he became President of the International Association against Cancer (UICC). He is considered one of the most renowned cancer researchers in Switzerland.

In 2005 he received the Montaigne Prize .

Cavalli is married and has seven children.

Cavalli was a member of the parishes of Verscio, Locarno and Muralto. From 1987 to 1995 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino . From 1995 to 2007 he was a member of the National Council and was a member of various parliamentary commissions. From 1999 to 2002 he also served as group leader of the Social Democrats. Shortly before the 2007 elections , he announced his resignation from the National Council, but his candidacy for the Council of States failed in the same year. Cavalli then withdrew from politics. On September 4, 2011, the Ticino SP elected him as candidate for the Council of States in the Swiss parliamentary elections 2011 .

Cavalli is regarded as a representative of the extreme left wing of his party and a staunch Marxist . When he resigned, he criticized his SP as a “lazy party functionaries”.

In the 2019 National Council elections , Cavalli will stand for the Forum Alternativo, which he founded, on a joint list with the Greens and the Communists . In the event of an election, he aims to found a parliamentary parliamentary group that is alternative to the left.
