The Passo del Turchino is an Italian pass crossing the Strada provinciale 456, which connects Genoa Voltri with Masone and thus the Ligurian port city in the further course of the road with the Piedmontese province of Alessandria . The name of the pass is borrowed from the 672 meter high Monte Turchino .

The pass reaches its highest point at 588 meters above sea level. This is reached via the Acquasanta road as well as the high route of the Ligurian mountains . The Strada Provinciale tunnel, which runs below the pass crossing, is located at an altitude of 532 meters. At the base, the A26 motorway runs under the mountain range.

Once a year, the Milan – Sanremo cycling race also takes place over the pass, where the racers reach the highest point on the route.

Main article: Massacre at the Turchino Pass

On May 19, 1944, 59 political prisoners from the Genoa Marassi prison were shot near the pass by members of the Waffen SS . The shootings were carried out on the orders of Friedrich Engel , who is also known in Italy as the butcher of Genoa . Documents supporting this massacre were rediscovered in 1994 in the so-called closet of shame .
