Patema Inverted ( Japanese サ カ サ マ の パ テ マ , Sakasama no Patema ) is a Japanese science fiction animated film directed by Yasuhiro Yoshiura from 2013.

action

In 2067, scientists found a way to extract energy from gravity . However, the first experiment on this fails and has devastating consequences: A large part of humanity and many objects and buildings experience reverse gravity, which pulls them towards the sky. Survivors of this disaster, as well as people spared by reverse gravity, each began to build a new civilization.

Some of these people were driven underground, protected from reverse gravity. Over time, they built a city with its own ecosystem . Patema lives in this city and regularly sneaks out of it to explore the area. Since her grandfather, the head of the group, knows of the danger and the area in which Patema regularly travels has been declared a danger zone, he is reprimanded after her investigation. Since she is still too young in his eyes, her grandfather and a friend of hers named Porta refuse to tell her the whole truth. Instead, Porta describes "bat people" with red eyes who hang from the ceiling and abduct people. Another friend of Patema, Lagos, secretly visits her regularly and tells her stories from his voyages of discovery to the “real world” and brings her souvenirs. A photo of the surface with the inscription "The true world" can be seen.

On the surface, a totalitarian state called Aiga emerged, the head of which, Izamura, follows a strict educational pattern: He describes the catastrophe as a punishment from God that drew all sinful people to heaven, and forbids everyone to show interest in heaven or to associate with it Busy past. Students are forbidden to have ideas against the thoughts of the state. With this method and the radical annihilation of enemies, the chief uses fear to ensure law and order in Aiga. In this state, all students are required to attend educational courses and are strictly monitored by the security police and various cameras. In addition, Izamura is convinced that there are still “inverted” people alive, whom he describes as scum, and has a plan to find them and destroy them.

Age, one of the students, takes great interest in the sky and often sneaks out of the courses to observe the sky. His father had died a few years earlier while attempting to climb the sky in a spaceship he had made . The incident was declared an accident by Aiga, which Age doubts.

Patema, after going out to explore one more time despite her grandfather's warning, meets a bat man who appears as a hooded person with a mask and twisted gravity. This tries to take it. When trying to escape from him, she falls into a large hole within the danger zone. She wakes up on a stone ledge, enveloped in vegetation . The rucksack you brought with you falls from the ledge, revealing that Patema is on the surface and that her gravity is reversed; the sky is below her. The backpack, hanging from a fence and dangling above the sky below, is discovered by Age, which is in its usual place. When she tries to grab her backpack, she is discovered by Age and rescued to a small hut. The backpack falls into the depths of the sky.

From there on, Age and Patema get to know each other and talk about their worlds. In doing so, they discover that by holding on they can cancel each other's gravity and use this to fly. The whole thing is observed by Izamura on camera and he gives the order to take Patema prisoner. Age and Patema then flee from the hut and escape using their ability to fly, but at the last moment are taken from the air by the security police and captured. Age is threatened by Izamura for his behavior and Patema is imprisoned on top of the largest building, the Aiga Administrative Center.

The invert group from the underground notices at the same time the prolonged absence of Patema and concludes that it must have fallen to the surface. You start a rescue attempt.

Age, haunted by guilt, returns to its place. There he meets Porta, who has gone to the surface to look for Patema. Together with the people from the underground, they forge a plan to save Patema from the administration building. The chief describes that the danger zone has been declared as such, since a shaft there leads directly into the administrative center. Age and Porta use the trick of using their mutual gravity to climb this building.

Meanwhile, Patema is informed by Izamura that Lagos was captured and tortured by the security police on his last reconnaissance trip until he reveals the exact location of the underground civilization. He died of their consequences without betraying his people. Patema is said to suffer the same fate.

Porta and Age, at the top, split up and Age advances to Patema alone. Before they escape, however, they are cornered by the security police and Izamura. The situation on the building comes to a head when Izamura threatens Age with a weapon. Before the shot, Patema Age grabs at the last moment and due to the added weight of Patema from a chain, they begin to fall into the sky at high speed. Izamura then declares the two of them dead and orders his first commandant Jaku to report Ages death as being caused by an accident. Jaku is becoming increasingly skeptical of Izamura's actions.

Age and Patema begin to fall into the night sky. Upon closer inspection, it turns out that the sky is a solid surface with reverse gravity. You end up in an area not inhabited by lamps and metal buildings. There they discover the spaceship operated by Ages father and find out that it was operated solely by weights with reverse gravity. You will also find the father's diary , in which he describes the friendship with Lagos and how they designed the spaceship together. The father's accident turns out to be a targeted murder by Izamura and the security police. As the night goes by and the surface begins to warm up and glow, they start their return journey with the spaceship. Patema and Age get closer.

The spaceship is discovered by the students Aigas and Izamura shortly before landing and threatens to be shot down. Age and Patema escape from the spaceship and sink into the depths, where they are received by underground civilization. Meanwhile, Izamura, Jaku and his people use the landed ship to follow them underground. They land on the platform where the inverted are, with Patema and Age and some security officers losing their footing and falling further into the depths. When the underground people begin to help the security police in danger, Jaku takes the side of the inverted. Izamura follows Age and Patema.

Once at the bottom of the shaft, Age and Patema are again threatened by Izamura with a weapon. Age, who has a firm grip on Patema and protests not to let go of her, is injured in the leg by Izamura's weapon and apparently loses the strength to hold Patema. Before Izamura can fire a second bullet, he is attacked by Porta, who snatches the weapon and then falls up the shaft. Patema takes Izamura and the ground beneath Izamura begins to break. To the surprise of those present, all the fragments were torn up. Izamura, seized by Patema, falls into the hole on the surface of a world that Patema sees as being the right way round and on which there are ruins of buildings from prehistoric times. Izamura is caught by the falling spaceship and pulled into the sky and Patema begins to slowly fall back towards the hole, but is saved by Jaku.

It turns out that the true surface with real sky is right side for Patema and wrong side for the people of Aiga. Thus, the actual inverted were the Aiga citizens who, for fear of reverse gravity, escaped underground and created a false surface, whereas the underground people were the people who were not caught by reverse gravity.

The remaining inverted, Patema, Age and Jaku decide to reunite humanity and live together on the surface.
