Patricio G. Mariano

Patricio Mariano y Geronimo (born March 17, 1877 in Manila , † January 28, 1935 in Manila) was a Filipino playwright, poet, journalist, writer, revolutionary, composer, musician and painter. He was born as the son of Petronilo Mariano and Dionisia Geronimo in Santa Cruz, a modern part of Manila, and is considered the most important writer, composer and translator of the Tagalog language in the Philippines in the 20th century .

He received his education at the Ateneo Municipal, now Ateneo de Manila University , and the Colegio de San Juan de Letran . He studied accounting at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the Liceo de Manila, now Manila Central University .

He joined the Katipunan in 1896 during the Philippine Revolution and was inducted into the organization by Jose Dizon , a former member of La Liga Filipina and a founder of the Katipunan. In 1898 he became the right hand man of Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista , an adviser to General Emilio Aguinaldo , who later became president. In Malolos he became editor of the Imprenta de Malolos and wrote as a journalist for the newspapers El Heraldo de la Revolucion and Ang Kaibigan ng Bayan . After the Philippine-American War he returned to Manila, where he wrote for the regular newspapers Los Obreros, Ang Paggawa, Katwiran, Lunas ng Bayan, El Renacimiento Filipino, La Vanguardia and Taliba .

Above all, he wrote symbolic and romantic stories with which he reached the readers of the newspapers and garnered great approval. During this time he developed his musical talent, wrote operettas and zarzuelas in the Tagalog language and was therefore nicknamed the Dean of Tagalog Authors . His works Sampaguita premiered at the Zorilla Theater in 1901, Anak ng Dagat , Ang Pakakak at the Manila Grand Opera House in 1913 and Ang Silanganan at the Rizal Theater in Tondo on December 30, 1904. The best known, however, are his translations of José Rizal's socially critical novels Noli me tangere and El Filibusterismo and the opera Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti into the Tagalog language. He has received numerous awards for his work, including from the Union de Artistas , Union de Impresores , Buklod na Ginto , Aklatang Bayan and Lupong Tagapagpalaganap ng Akademya ng Wikang Tagalog organizations . Patricio G. Mariano was a co-founder of the Associacion Pro Patria .

He died of cancer on January 28, 1935 in Manila.
