Life

Caulfield's grave in Highgate Cemetery , London

Patrick Caulfield studied at the Chelsea School of Art in London from 1956 to 1960 and at the Royal College of Art from 1960 to 1963. He took part in the famous Young Contemporaries exhibition of 1961, which the Royal College students led by David Hockney , RB Kitaj , Allen Jones , Derek Boshier and Peter Phillips in one fell swoop. After graduation, Caulfield returned as a professor at the Chelsea School of Art (1963–1971).

In 1964 his work was shown in the Pop Art New Generation exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London. But Caulfield was not your typical pop art artist. Influenced by Juan Gris , Legér and René Magritte , he developed his own, linear style that only reproduced recognizable objects in outline. He also combined straight lines with detailed elements in the style of photorealism. Caulfield also designed posters, book covers and ceramics, and in 1973 he illustrated poems by Jules Laforgue for Petersburg Press . At the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden he designed sets for Frederick Ahton's ballet Rhapsody .
