history

The evangelical Paul Gerhardt parish, which had been independent since April 1, 1948, did not have its own church building and initially used a hall at Plauener Strasse 17. In the post-war period , which was still characterized by war destruction and material need, the young parish managed to enter the so-called emergency church program of the Aid Organization of the Evangelical Churches to be accepted. According to the design by the architect Otto Bartning, the Dortmund community received a type B emergency church with a polygonal chancel . In autumn 1948, construction work began on the property at Markgrafenstrasse 123 (corner of Ruhrallee). After the topping-out ceremony on April 3, 1949, the community's lack of funds delayed further work. Finally, on March 12, 1950, on the 343rd birthday of the eponym Paul Gerhardt, the parish inaugurated the church with a solemn service. In 1959 the parish erected a bell tower next to the church. This houses four bronze bells with the tone sequence b′-c "-es" -f ". The two small bells date from the 16th century and are the oldest bells in downtown Dortmund. The two large bells come from the Rincker in Sinn bell foundry.

In 2011, the Paul Gerhardt Church, the tower, the presbytery and a small wall, the church and rectory were connects as monument in the monument list of Dortmund entered.
