Paul Ackermann (political scientist)

Paul Ackermann (born January 31, 1939 in Fridingen an der Donau ) is a German political scientist and expert on political education and civic engagement. From 1987 to 2004 he was a professor at the Ludwigsburg University of Education .

Life

Paul Ackermann studied political science , history , Latin and agricultural policy at the universities of Berlin , Munich and Tübingen . After receiving his doctorate on the subject of "The German Farmers' Association in the Political Power Play of the Federal Republic" in 1967, he was initially an assistant at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Tübingen and from 1972 Professor for Political Science at the Reutlingen University of Education , where he also held the post of rector from 1976 to 1979 . In 1987 he moved to the Ludwigsburg University of Education, where he was Professor of Political Science until 2004.

He was involved as a board member of the German Association for Political Science , member of the Council for Peace and Conflict Research and on the jury for the Gustav Heinemann Peace Prize for books for children and young people as well as in curriculum development for social and community studies. For political education he developed the model of the “citizen capable of intervention”. He also implemented one of his main research areas, "political participation", in political practice as an honorary district mayor in Reutlingen-Gönningen (1989 to 2009) and as an expert on civic engagement projects. His citizens' handbook achieved wide circulation with four editions. In the book, central political fields of action are presented and tips are given on how to become politically active as a citizen.

Paul Ackermann was also the editor of a series on social science teaching and co-editor of a series on historical and political education as well as co-author of several textbooks for political education. In addition to his scientific writings, he published local and regional historical articles on Reutlingen and the Swabian Alb.

Awards

For his services to science and political practice, he received the Medal of Merit from the City of Reutlingen in 2010 and the Gold Staufer Medal from the State of Baden-Württemberg in 2013 .
