North Frisian Chronicle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The North Frisian chronicle by Anton Heimreich , pastor of the Hallig Nordstrandischmoor , is a chronic work. It appeared in print in 1666 as the oldest chronicle in North Friesland .

content

In his chronicle, Anton Heimreich described the history of North Friesland from the mythical beginnings to Christianization and the Reformation to the Burchardi flood in 1634 and the re- diking of northern beach by the Dutch dikemaster Quirinus Indervelden , whose direct witness Heimreich was. By and large, his presentation follows the chronology, which is often broken, for example when he reported on the office of the Staller , its history and important representatives. Often he also added family trees.

The description of the second Marcellus flood (" Grote Mansdränke ") of 1362 and the associated destruction of the beach landscape goes back to the North Frisian Chronicle . However, Heimreich dated the flood to 1300. His description of the sinking of the place Rungholt is considered the first mention of the Rungholt legend and as a template for the poem by Detlev von Liliencron . The term Blanker Hans as a synonym for the North Sea that is still widespread today can also be found for the first time in the North Frisian Chronicle .

Lore

For the island of Strand , Heimreich was able to draw on the work of Matthias Boetius and Johannes Petreus in addition to the documents of his father and father-in-law, and for Eiderstedt on the annals of his contemporary Peter Sax . For the rest of North Frisia, for which no documents were available to him, his explanations remained incomplete. His North Frisian Chronicle is important , as is the Schleßwig Church History , published in 1686 , above all as a source for lost older documents. After only two years it was given a new edition, to which two poems in the extinct Strander Frisian are added. A third edition, expanded to include documents from Heimreich's estate, was published by Niels Nikolaus Falck in 1819.
