Paul Baehr

Paul Baehr (born September 26, 1855 in Thorn , West Prussia , † August 1, 1929 in Bad Oeynhausen ) was a German writer and local politician .

Paul Baehr was born on September 26, 1855 as the son of a factory owner in Thorn. After attending grammar school in Thorn, Berlin and Spandau , he joined the Prussian military in 1876, where he became an officer in 1878. After an accident-related injury, he was incapacitated and retired from military service as a lieutenant in 1881 .

In 1883 he moved to Bad Oeynhausen , where he lived as a writer. His poetry in particular received great attention at the time. At the beginning of the 20th century, Baehr was one of the most dubbed German poets; over 200 compositions for his songs have appeared. The first chronicle of the city of Bad Oeynhausen , which he wrote, is also important .

From 1900 he was a member of the city ​​council of Bad Oeynhausen and from 1903 its chairman. From 1908 to 1922 he was also deputy mayor of the city as an alderman . After the First World War he joined the German People's Party and remained a staunch monarchist. In 1928 he retired from all offices. He died on August 1, 1929 at the age of seventy-three in Bad Oeynhausen. In his villa ("Villa Baehr"), which he bequeathed to the city of Bad Oeynhausen, located at the spa gardens, the German Fairy Tale and Weser Legends Museum has been located since 1973 .

Paul Baehr became the first honorary citizen of Bad Oeynhausen in 1912 . In 1894 he was accepted as a Freemason in the "Wittekind zur Westfälische Pforte" lodge in Minden and in 1920 in the "Zur Heilbringenden Quelle" lodge in Bad Oeynhausen.

He was a bearer of the Princely Lippian Knight's Cross, 2nd class and the Red Eagle Order, 4th class.
