Paul Butorac

Pavao (Paul) Butorac (born March 26, 1888 in Perast , † February 22, 1966 in Dubrovnik , Croatia ) was a Roman Catholic priest , historian , theological writer and Bishop of Kotor and Dubrovnik .

Life

Paul Butorac came from one of the most respected families in Perast near Kotor . He attended high school in Perast and Kotor. After graduating from high school, he entered the archbishop's seminary in Zadar . He was ordained a priest on July 17, 1910. He took language lessons (Croatian and Italian), studied history / art history and geography and taught these subjects in Zadar . From 1918 to 1920 he was rector of the seminary in Kotor and worked as a catechist at the grammar school there. On January 5, 1938 he was appointed by Pope Pius XI. appointed Bishop of Kotor. It was consecrated on March 6, 1938 by the Bishop of Split-Makarska , Kvirin Klement Bonefačić . Co- consecrators were Miho Pušić , the Bishop of Hvar , and Josip Marija Carević , the Bishop of Dubrovnik. On September 25, 1950, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Dubrovnik. He was a council father in the first session of the Second Vatican Council . The historian and theological writer wrote books and articles in magazines and newspapers. His most famous book, Our Lady of the Rocks , has been translated into several languages. In 1964 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Zagreb .

He died at the age of seventy-eight and was buried in the Episcopal Crypt in Dubrovnik Cathedral.
