Severin Pernek

Severin Pernek (born November 9, 1924 in Travnik , † May 2, 1997 in Dubrovnik ) was a priest and bishop of Dubrovnik .

Life

The son of Franciszek Pernek, of Slovene descent, and Anne Auguste von Scheerberg, a Swiss , attended elementary school in his hometown and then high school. In 1943 he entered the seminary in Banja Luka . His brother Franz, who was killed in an attack by partisans, also studied here. He studied in Sarajevo and Zagreb until the seminars were closed. He went back to Sarajevo on foot with a group of refugees; his father was also killed in the last days of the war. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1948 in Zagreb . As a priest of the Diocese of Banja Luka he was in the Archdiocese of Zagrebincardinated. After years in parish ministry, he went to study canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome , where he received his doctorate in 1960. On his return from Rome he became vicar general .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on April 10, 1967 Bishop of Dubrovnik. It was consecrated on June 18, 1967 in the Cathedral of Zagreb by Archbishop Mario Cagna , the Apostolic Delegate of Yugoslavia . Co- consecrators were Frane Franić , Bishop of Split-Makarska , and Alfred Pichler , Bishop of Banja Luka. His episcopal motto was "Veriteti in caritate" ( Serve the truth in love).

On a pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1981, he suffered a serious car accident from which he never recovered. On November 12, 1988 Pope John Paul II placed the Bishop of Mostar , Pavao Žanić, as administrator at his side. On December 7, 1989 Serverin Pernek resigned as Bishop of Dubrovnik.

He died at the age of seventy-third and was buried in the episcopal tomb of Dubrovnik Cathedral.
