Paul Crampel
Paul Crampel (born November 17, 1864 in Nancy , † April 9, 1891 not far from El-Kuti , near Wadai ) was a French explorer of Africa .
On behalf of Savorgnan de Brazza , Crampel undertook a successful expedition between August 12, 1888 and the end of January 1889 , which led him from Madiville (now Lastoursville in Gabon ) along the Ogowe to the tribal area of the Fang in the north and back to Corisco Bay .
In the following year he was commissioned by the Comité de l'Afrique française to reach Lake Chad from the Congo through the unexplored inland areas and to find a connection to Algeria . On August 15, 1890, he and the Europeans Lauzière, Biscarrat and Nébout started with 30 Senegalese and 250 porters from Stanley Pool (today Pool Malebo). On September 25th he reached Bangui am Ubangi , the last European station. On January 1, 1891, he and Lauzière began marching north. Biscarrat and Nébout were left behind in the rear . After an arduous march, Crampel reached El-Kuti, about 500 km from Ubangi (between the 9th and 10th parallel north) at the end of February. In the meantime all the companions had left him except for five men. Before the rearguard could arrive, he marched further north. On April 9, he was murdered by Senussi not far from El-Kuti .
Lauzière had died of diarrhea a month earlier, and Biscarrat was killed on May 25 by local tribes in M'poko near Bangui. Only Nébout survived and was able to return to Brazzaville .
