Paul D. Zimmerman (born July 3, 1938 in New York City , New York , † March 2, 1993 in Princeton , New Jersey ) was an American screenwriter , film critic and political activist.

biography

Born in New York City, Paul D. Zimmerman worked as a film critic for the US news magazine Newsweek from 1967 to 1975 . He also wrote books like the 1968 published work Marx Brothers at the Movies and wrote 1974-1977 scripts for the US children's series Sesame Street (Sesame Street) . He also created the character Herry Monster for the television series . But he gained greater fame for his screenplay for the feature film The King of Comedy , which was directed by Martin Scorsese and in which Robert De Niro and Jerry Lewis played the leading roles. In 1984 Paul D. Zimmerman received the British Academy Film Award in the category Best Original Screenplay , which was presented for the first time that year.

He was also politically active and was president of one of the US Nuclear Freeze movements for five years , which campaigned for nuclear disarmament . Although Paul D. Zimmerman thought politically progressive, he was a Republican delegate to the 1984 Republican National Convention . There he was the only eligible voter who did not vote for Ronald Reagan . The reason for his abstention was to draw attention to the possibilities of world peace and a nuclear freeze.

Paul D. Zimmerman was married with two biological children and a foster son. He died on March 2, 1993 in Princeton Hospital, New Jersey. The cause of this was colon cancer , as his wife Barbara told the New York Times .
