Paul Hermann Dienst (born July 31, 1881 in Elberfeld , † June 20, 1939 in Bad Godesberg ) was a German geologist and paleontologist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Paul Dienst worked for a year at the Oberbergamt Dortmund before studying for a semester in Geneva and then taking up military service. Then Dienst studied mining in Heidelberg and Berlin and passed the mountain trainee exam in 1906. In 1906/07 he studied geology in Gießen , and in 1907 he joined the Geological-Paleontological Institute in Marburg as an assistant . Paul Dienst became an assistant at the Prussian State Geological Institute in 1908 and received his doctorate in Marburg in 1913. In 1918 he was appointed curator of the collection and, together with Walther Gothan , compiled the large original catalog published in 1928 (supplements 1932 and 1936) for the collection. In the spring of 1924 Dienst was awarded the title of professor. He was appointed regional geologist and professor in 1930. Dienst retired on April 1, 1939 due to illness.

Paul Dienst became a member of the Paleontological Society in 1912, the year it was founded .

A book from the private collection of Paul Dienst was found in the holdings of the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart while researching Nazi looted property . The bookplate designed by Otto Ubbelohde by Paul Dienst is glued in there .
