Paul Franke (born October 21, 1881 in Nauendorf ; † July 25, 1984 in Bad Tölz ) was a German publisher .

Life

Franke grew up in Altenburg . After graduating from high school, he worked for Girardet in Essen from 1911 to 1914 . During the First World War , he served as a lieutenant colonel in the news department, having previously joined the Otto Beyer fashion publisher in Leipzig as director . In 1922 the Deutsche Reichsbahn appointed him for its commercial advertising, for which purpose it had founded a company in Berlin and Munich. After nine years, Paul Franke became director of this company. During this time Franke founded a number of publishing companies and took over the management of several publishing houses that belonged to the Stinnes or industrial group.

Under the collective name "United Publishing Companies Franke & Co. KG, Berlin", Paul Franke summarized the individual publishers he had founded in the meantime and published the following titles, among others:

  • "Journal for Public Economy"
  • "The rural community"
  • "Magazine for agricultural machinery"
  • "Auto Revue"
  • "The German National Economy"
  • "The German Insurance Industry"
  • "The Deutsche Bankwirtschaft"
  • "Business Administration"
  • "Vegetables and fruit"
  • "Film Kurier" (with daily publication)
  • "Photo stage"

A number of other publications complemented the VVG publishing program. Paul Franke had offices in Munich and in Berlin, in addition to offices, also had representative commercial and administrative buildings that were destroyed in the Second World War. Franke withdrew to his property in Rottach-Egern and concentrated on publishing. In particular, he wanted to re-release the “Film Kurier”, but the license from the American occupying power was given to the son of the Berlin lawyer who, as a liaison with the Americans, was responsible for issuing the license. Hans Borgelt , whom Franke had designated as editor-in-chief of the film courier, could therefore not be appointed.

The United Publishing Company was rebuilt after 1945, but without the formerly successful trade journals. Paul Franke brought out the film stage and the illustrated film courier .

Paul Franke, now often called “General Director Paul Franke”, is also known as a partner in Berlin's largest film theater, the Zoo-Palast with a studio. He appointed Max Knapp as managing director of this film theater company and thus enabled him to start as “Film Tsar of Berlin”.
