life and work

Graham first studied microbiology at Bristol University and graduated in 1978. At that time, however, he was already intensively involved in photography . His first exhibition took place in 1979 at the Arnolfini Center . From 1998 he lived mainly in the United States , from 2002 permanently in New York .

His photographic work is in the tradition of the British social realism of Bill Brandt . Garry Winogrand , Lee Friedlander , Diane Arbus , Stephen Shore and William Eggleston are named as further influences . Banal everyday things are not left out.

A1 - The Great North Road was published in 1981 and was Graham's first publication. It showed photos that were taken along Britain's largest trunk road, the A1 . The secretly recorded report Beyond Caring from 1986 illustrates the dreary atmosphere of British employment offices. The 1987 series Troubled Land about Northern Ireland contrasts peaceful landscapes with the harsh reality of a simmering civil war .

Paul Graham's work is represented in numerous important collections and has been shown in Germany in the Folkwang Museum and the Deichtorhallen , among others .
