Paul Grimault (born March 23, 1905 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , † March 29, 1994 in Mesnil-Saint-Denis ) was one of the most important French cartoons and directors.

He became known from 1937 for his children's and fairy tale films , which were initially produced as short films and later as cartoons.

His short film The Little Soldier (1947) based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen to the Jacques Prévert wrote the script, got the prize for the best animated film at the Festival of Venice in 1948, together with Melody Time of Walt Disney .

His best known and most personal work is The King and the Bird . The French master of animation has been working on Andersen's The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep since 1947 . After his work was performed in a defaced version in 1953, according to Grimault, he acquired the rights to the cartoon in 1966 and designed his personal version at the age of 75. The new version, which contains dialogues and chanson texts by Jacques Prévert, has won several international awards.

In 1979 Paul Grimault won the Louis Delluc Prize for The King and the Bird . In 1989 he was awarded the Honorary Prize of the French César Film Prize.
