Paul Hanley (born February 18, 1964 in Manchester , England ) is a British musician of Irish descent from Manchester. He became known as the drummer of the English cult band The Fall .

Life

Paul Hanley joined The Fall when he was still in school. At first he was the roadie for the band where his older brother Steve Hanley played bass. In 1980 he took over the drums when he was just 16 years old. Due to his age, he was unable to take part in some tours, so he missed a tour because he was just finishing school. He did not get the necessary papers from the authorities for a USA tour because he would have had to play in clubs that were only open to people aged 21 and over.

In The Fall, Paul Hanley played until March 1985. After that, he and school friends formed his own band, Kiss The Blade. Since there was already a band with this name, it was renamed Shout Bamalam. In 1988 they released an EP, the only release. The band broke up and he stopped making music for a few years, only when his brother Steve formed the band ARK . There he was first the keyboard player, but switched to drums when the drummer Karl Burns left the band. In 2002, ARK released their only and quite underrated CD Brainsold , on which Paul Hanley played the piano as well as the drums.

In 2001 Steve Hanley joined The Lovers , the band of Tom Hingley , the singer of the Inspiral Carpets, and caught up with his brother Paul, who has since played drums with The Lovers, alongside Kelly Wood on keyboards and Jason Brown on guitar. The first release was the single Yeah in 2003 , the debut album ABBA Are The Enemy was released in 2004 and the follow-up album Highlights was released in March 2008 .

In 1983 Hanley released a single with Marc Riley , and released two albums the following year.

Paul Hanley should not be confused with the musician of the same name from the English band Sacred , who is his nephew.
