Tom Hingley (born July 9, 1965 ) is a British musician and songwriter from Manchester . He became known as the singer of the Inspiral Carpets , one of the most successful bands of the Madchester era in the late 1980s / early 1990s.

Life

Tom Hingley was in Abingdon in the county of Oxfordshire born. In 1984 he moved to Manchester to study English , where he formed his first band, Too Much Texas, with school friends in 1985 . In 1989 he became the singer of Inspiral Carpets , which became the most important band in the Madchester movement alongside the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays . They had 17 hits in the UK charts and recorded four albums, all of which were in the UK top 20.

After the breakup of the Inspiral Carpets , Tom Hingley joined the band The Lovers in 1995. They released the EP Work Rest & Play , but then went their separate ways. Tom Hingley then released some solo records, Keep Britain Untidy (2000) and Soulfire (2001), the EP Happiness (2002) and the blues album Thames Valley Delta Blues (2009).

Since 2000 he has been running his own record label, Newmemorabilia Records .

In 2001, Tom Hingley reformed The Lovers , this time with Steve Hanley on bass, Paul Hanley on drums, Jason Brown on guitar and Kelly Wood on keyboards. Steve Hanley played bass in the English cult band The Fall from 1979 to 1998 , as did his younger brother Paul, who was the drummer for The Fall from 1980 to 1985. After the release of the single Yeah (2003), the lovers' first album, Abba Are The Enemy , came out in 2004 . The second album Highlights was released in March 2008.

The Inspiral Carpets have been touring England successfully again since 2002 . In 2006 and 2007 they played in front of sold out houses. In 2007 they released an album, Keep The Circle (B-Sides and udder stuff) , available only as an iTunes download. In March 2008 they went on tour again and announced a revival of their old label.
