Life and work

Paul Harig was a machinist. Since 1919 he was a member of the German Metal Workers Association (DMV). Since 1925 he has been a member of the works council of Hüttenwerk Haspe . From 1928 he was active in the revolutionary trade union opposition . After the seizure of power of the Nazis he emerged in February 1933 and emigrated soon to his homeland, the Saar . When it was reintegrated into the German Reich in 1935, he was arrested and imprisoned from September 18 to December 6, 1935 in the Dortmund Gestapo prison Steinwache. The Hamm Higher Regional Court later sentenced him to two years' imprisonment for "preparing for high treason", which he served in Dortmund, Rheda and Hagen until the end of April 1937.

After 1945, he and Wilhelm Alef were appointed by the US occupation administration to commission union development. He became chairman of the works council of Hasper Hütte , head of the Hagen local government of IG Metall and chairman of the DGB district committee. In 1950 he was expelled from IG Metall.

politics

Harig had been a member of the KPD since 1925. In 1945 he took part in the re-establishment of the KPD in Hagen and was its local chairman until the party was banned in 1956. He was also a member of the city council and was a member of the labor court. He was a member of the IG Metall-Bizonenrat and from 1947 a member of the board of the metalworking union. At the same time, he was first authorized representative of IG Metall in Hagen and second chairman of the DGB district committee in Hagen . In connection with the KPD's trade union policy in the early 1950s and in connection with a "wild" political strike in the "Hasper Hütte", Harig lost all of his trade union functions and was expelled from IG Metall. Until his death, he was never again accepted into IG Metall, despite several applications for reopening. From 1949 to 1953 Harig was a member of the German Bundestag . He was elected to the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In 1968 Harig took part in the founding of the DKP , in which he was again local chairman in Hagen.
