Life

Paul Jorion is a PhD in Sociology and a Social Anthropologist (PhD in Social Sciences from the Free University of Brussels ). He studied in Paris with Claude Lévi-Strauss (Collège de France) and the mathematician Georges-Théodule Guilbaud ( École Pratique des Hautes Études ) and in Cambridge with Meyer Fortes and Sir Edmund Leach , both students of Bronislaw Malinowski , the founding father of British social anthropology . He also trained as a psychoanalyst (Freudian and Lacanian) with the Jesuit psychoanalyst and philosopher Philippe Julien.

Jorion taught social anthropology at the University of Brussels (1977 to 1979) and the University of Cambridge (1979 to 1984). He taught psychoanalysis at the University of Paris VIII (1985-86) .

From 1984 to 1987 he was an official of the United Nations (FAO) involved in development projects in Africa. From 1987 to 1990 Jorion was a member of British Telecom's “Connex Project” on artificial intelligence, in which the ANELLA software (“Associative Network with Emergent Logical and Learning Abilities”) was developed.

In 1990 and 1991 he was a futures trader in a French bank. In 1997 he was Regents Lecturer at the University of California at Irvine . From 1998 to 2007 Jorion worked in the US banking sector as a pricing specialist. He participated in the development of high frequency trading (at the Bank of the European Union in Paris, then the Frontier Hedge Fund in Houston, Texas), as well as in the development of the e-MITS software, a fully automated system of subprime mortgage lending for the Californian company Bank IndyMac (1998 to 2002). He has published a book on the impact of Enron's bankruptcy on the stock markets ( Investing in a Post-Enron World , 2003).

Paul Jorion has been Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Lille in the research area ETHICS (Ethics on experiment, Transhumanism, Human Interactions, Care & Society) since March 1st, 2016 . He is also a columnist for Le Monde and L'Echo newspapers and Trend-Tendances magazine, and a literary critic for Quinzaines magazine . He was a member of the High Committee on the Future of the Belgian Financial Sector and the Positive Economy Reflection Group headed by Jacques Attali .

Jorion's books deal with the prediction of the financial and economic crisis that occurred shortly afterwards due to the subprime credit in the USA ( The Crisis of American Capitalism , 2007), with the myth of the money created by commercial banks ex nihilo ( L'argent, mode d 'emploi , 2009) and with the history of the concepts of “truth” and “reality” in science ( Comment la vérité et la réalité furent inventées , 2009). In Penser tout haut l'économie avec Keynes (2015) he developed the work of John Maynard Keynes further. In the 2014 comic book The Survival of Species. Jorion takes a critical, but not entirely hopeless view of capitalism (with Grégory Maklès) and takes financial capitalism to justice. Vers un nouveau monde (2017) drafts a comprehensive policy program, including the proposal for a Sismondi tax on machine productivity and the gratuitousness of necessities.

In À quoi bon penser à l'heure du grand collapse? (2017), a book of conversations with Frank Cormerais and Jacques Athanase Gilbert, answers Jorion's questions about his contributions in the fields of economics, psychology, the philosophy of science, and generally about the role he played in the expansion of digital technologies and their interpretation Has. In Le dernier qui s'en va éteint la lumière (2016) and Défense et illustration du genre humain (2018), he considers the possible extinction of our species.

In 2019 he published a travelogue novel Mes vacances à Morro Bay (on the California coast), written 15 years earlier, and the first volume of a political diary about the American President Trump La chute de la météorite Trump. Un objet populiste mal identifié (September 2015 - April 2018) .
