Paul Joseph Schmitt (born March 31, 1911 in Nieder-Jeutz , Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine , German Empire , † September 9, 1987 in Metz ) was Bishop of Metz .

Life

He was ordained a priest on July 14, 1935 . On May 29, 1958, Pope Pius XII appointed him . as coadjutor bishop of Metz and at the same time titular bishop of Centenaria . He was ordained bishop by his diocesan bishop Joseph-Jean Heintz on November 13, 1958. Co - consecrators were Jean-Marie Villot , auxiliary bishop in Paris , later cardinal state secretary in the Roman curia, and Léon Arthur Elchinger , coadjutor bishop of Strasbourg . As early as November 30, 1958, with the death of Bishop Heintz, he succeeded him as Bishop of Metz.

As a council father, he participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . From 1982 to 1983 he was Vice-President of the Council of the European Bishops' Conferences "Consilium Conferentiarum Episcopalium Europae" (CCEE)

In 1987 he retired as Bishop of Metz and died on September 9, 1987.
